Donald Trump Begins Gulf Tour with First Stop in Saudi Arabia

Former U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, marking the start of a multi-day Gulf tour that also includes stops in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The visit aims to strengthen trade ties, though the White House acknowledges the challenges of resolving ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Air Force One landed at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh at approximately 9:50 AM local time (6:50 AM GMT). Trump was welcomed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In a show of military solidarity, Saudi F-15 fighter jets escorted the presidential aircraft before landing. This marks Trump’s first official trip abroad during his second term in office. The visit will continue until May 16. Although he previously made a brief visit to Rome to attend Pope Francis' funeral, this Gulf tour is seen as a key foreign policy engagement. The White House described the journey as a “historic return” to the region. Notably, this visit mirrors Trump’s first overseas trip during his initial presidency eight years ago, when he also chose Saudi Arabia as his first destination. That 2017 trip became iconic for the now-famous photo with the glowing orb and his participation in a traditional Saudi sword dance. In the lead-up to this tour, the Trump administration has been actively involved in several high-stakes diplomatic efforts. These include brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, facilitating the release of an Israeli-American hostage held by Hamas in Gaza, and engaging in a new round of nuclear talks with Iran. Trump also made headlines last week by announcing his approval of a truce with Yemen’s Houthi rebels, following nearly two months of daily airstrikes. This unexpected move is seen as a significant shift in U.S. policy in the region. The Gulf visit is expected to focus on trade deals, regional security, and bolstering alliances with key Arab partners. Observers are closely watching whether Trump’s diplomatic overtures will yield tangible outcomes in one of the world's most volatile regions.
