Google has officially announced its new foldable phone, the
Pixel 10 Pro Fold, the latest in its foldable lineup. While it shares a very
similar overall design with last year’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the new model brings
some key improvements that could change how users view foldable devices.
In this article, we’ll compare both models to see if the
Pixel 10 Pro Fold is worth upgrading to.
Design and Weight
Unlike the trend of slimmer foldables, Google did not
prioritize reducing thickness or weight.
- Pixel 10 Pro Fold:
• Thickness (unfolded): 5.2 mm
• Thickness (folded): 10.8 mm
• Weight: 258 g
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold:
• Thickness (unfolded): 5.1 mm
• Thickness (folded): 10.5 mm
• Weight: 257 g
This makes the new phone slightly thicker and heavier, but 1
mm narrower, making it easier to use when folded. Compared to competitors like
the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (215 g) and Honor Magic V5 (218 g), Google’s foldables are
still heavier.
Display
Display improvements are modest but meaningful:
- Outer Display:
• Pixel 10 Pro Fold: 6.4-inch OLED,
slimmer bezels
• Pixel 9 Pro Fold: 6.3-inch OLED
• Both support 120Hz refresh rate
- Inner Display:
• Both: 8-inch OLED LTPO, 120Hz refresh
rate
• Pixel 10 Pro Fold reaches 3000 nits
brightness vs 2700 nits on Pixel 9 Pro Fold
Durability – A Major Leap Forward
The biggest improvement in the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is
durability. It is the first foldable phone to achieve an IP68 rating, offering
resistance against both dust and water.
- Pixel 10 Pro Fold: IP68 (dust and water resistant)
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold: IPX8 (water resistant only)
This makes the new Pixel much safer for use near beaches,
pools, or dusty environments.
New Features: PixelSnap and Wireless Charging
Google introduced a new feature called PixelSnap, which
works similarly to Apple’s MagSafe, allowing magnetic accessories. It also
supports the new Qi2 wireless charging standard, making charging faster and
more stable.
Performance and Processor
- Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Powered by Google’s new Tensor G5 chip
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Powered by last year’s Tensor G4 chip
Although benchmarks haven’t been released yet, Tensor G5 is
expected to bring improved AI performance and optimizations. Google’s chips
have always focused on enhancing AI features rather than raw performance, and
this continues with the new processor.
Price and Availability
- Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Available for pre-order now, starting
at $1,800, shipping in October 2025
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Still priced at $1,800 but will likely see discounts once
the new model is available
Conclusion: Is It Worth the Upgrade?
If you already own the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, upgrading isn’t
essential unless you really value:
- Full IP68 durability
- Brighter inner display
- PixelSnap and Qi2 wireless charging support
But if you’re considering your first foldable from Google,
the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the better choice. It delivers meaningful durability
improvements and modern features, even if it’s heavier than competitors.
